Podcast | Can Mexico Sustain Its Nearshoring Boom?

January 17, 2025

Can Mexico keep attracting manufacturers in a time of political and economic uncertainty?

There’s no doubt that Mexico has been the prime beneficiary of the nearshoring trend of the last few years: the shift in manufacturing from China and East Asia to North America, to avoid tariffs and rising wages in Chinese factories, and get closer to markets in the U.S. But can Mexico keep up this manufacturing boom? To gauge its prospects for the coming year, we check in again with Jorge Gonzalez Henrichsen, co-chief executive officer of The Nearshore Company, which helps businesses move their manufacturing to Mexico. We discuss the various factors that could affect production there, including the new presidential administrations of Donald Trump in the U.S., and Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico. For a number of reasons, Henrichsen is optimistic that the trend will continue, but there are some possible speed bumps that could slow things down. Hosted by Bob Bowman, Editor-in-Chief of SupplyChainBrain.
